Name: Dct. Donald Gavin Yorke
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Country of Birth: England
Personality: The quintessential detective, Yorke is inquisitive and focused on details but maybe somewhat lacking in social grace and tact. He’s very keen to examine people and to try to psycho-analyse them which usually involves asking inappropriate questions from information he extrapolated from watching them. He’s aware that his Stand is lacking in the offensive department and so he usually considers it just another tool in his arsenal, albeit a handy one, and considers his detective skills to be his true power. Perhaps ironically, he’s sometimes even loathe to use it because he thinks the Telepathy function is ‘cheating’ but he is at heart a pragmatist. He’s pretty damn arrogant about his own intelligence but has a strong sense of justice which will often motivate him to get involved in situations he shouldn’t. He’s also rather keen on pointing out his own poor luck.
History: A former police officer in England, Donald Yorke was born in Buckinghamshire and moved to London to join Scotland Yard after being inspired by the various detectives in fiction he’d read about as a boy. Rising through the ranks, he became a detective in no time at all and was partnered with Alice Sting, his close friend and confidante. While on the hunt for a murderer who stalked through the city streets, Yorke made a fatefully bad call. He was certain that the murderer utilised a knife to perform the kills due to the odd, puckered marks the victims’ bodies had. He found out, only too late, that they used an arrow. Sting was shot dead protecting Yorke and was avenged by her friend shortly after. As she lay dying, Yorke felt self-doubt for the first time and broke down apologising for his arrogance.
He retired from the force, believing himself a disgrace. Whether the trauma activated some latent ability or it was some other factor, Yorke found that items he touched left a glowing point that, when he willed it, could connect into a chain. It wasn’t long until he worked out that this was some supernatural ability and when he saw his Stand for the first time, had a name at once. Yorke moved to America and became a private detective, working as a consultant in New York with a small circle of allies. He’s since left the city after a disturbing phone call from an old colleague in Fallbrook…
Current Life: While working as a private detective, Yorke tends to encounter any number of bizarre cases and while he’s yet haunted by the death of his partner, he strives to learn all he can about the paranormal. And, maybe, find a way to bring her back.
Skills: Where to begin! Yorke is a skilled detective with excellent observational skills and a firm grasp of psychology, he’s a respectable hand to hand combatant (though he can just barely keep pace with a Stand of Power C or up and would be overpowered most times) and a good marksman with his trusty Luger pistol. He’s also a lock pick, well versed in science and has a decent level of experience with Stands so he rarely underestimates an opponent.
Weaknesses: Yorke’s biggest weakness is, and always will be, himself. His ego and single-mindedness so often gets in the way that he makes mistakes he never would if he was thinking rationally. If he makes a conclusion, he is convinced it’s right even if he doesn’t have all the pieces yet. Beyond that, his Stand requires extremely close range and offers little in the way of practical defence as it’s pretty much just a head (albeit one that doesn’t transfer the damage to him if it’s hurt) as well as minimal offensive abilities unless he uses his abilities creatively. He also has abysmal luck.
Appearance: Yorke is an average height with a pronounced brow, athletic build and short green hair kept hidden beneath his hat. Somewhere between good looking and plain, Yorke is known for his nearly always moving eyes and scarred knuckles from numerous bare-knuckle fights he was involved in in his youth. On his face is a half moon mark beneath his eye which appears to be purely cosmetic (typical Jojo weirdness).
He’s smart dressed but, in typical Araki style, it’s a little eccentric. Yorke is usually seen in a grey buttoned down shirt with diamond print covering it, a red tie and a green vest with a clover motif. His lower half he wears patterned jeans and practical work-boots while on his head is perched a bowler hat which obscures his short hair. He’s rather noticeably got star shaped cufflinks and a chain from his pocket to his belt and another from his vest’s outside to inside pocket.
Other Details: Yorke has EXCEPTIONALLY bad luck. No matter how well he plans and deduces, he’s incredibly unlucky 90% of the time. The remaining 10% is how he’s stayed alive this long with mini-miracles to offset.
Stand Profile
Stand Name: Alice in Chains
Ability: Alice in Chains allows Yorke to create [Connections] between two points that he touches, which take the form of glowing orange chains. He can mentally dictate the length of said chains, either making them incredibly long or so short the two points are touching.
While the chains themselves are extremely durable, there are a few caveats to their use. Firstly, in order to established a chain he has to create two points for the chain to connect, which he does by touching the point with his hands. One with his left hand and one with his right, which hand he uses dictates if the point is an (a) or a (b) for connection purposes. This limit doesn’t apply if he’s connecting the chain to himself and all he needs to do is touch the item with any part of his body. Secondly, he can only have ten active chains at any time and twenty active points. This is purely down to his ability to focus and his impressive willpower so it could theoretically be enhanced, but nevertheless, trying to maintain more is beyond his power.
The chains have a secondary quality that they can also [Conduct]. That is, if a point is placed on a socket and flicked on and another onto an appliances plug, the appliance would receive power through the chain. This applies to a variety of things that could pass through a medium (i.e. blood if connecting two ends of a severed artery). This conduction also means inanimate objects connected to Yorke can be manipulated as if he held them, but the lack of tactile feedback makes it quite imprecise and, as with real chains, it’s not the easiest thing to control and manoeuvre.
Stand Type: Ability
Power: E (No damage can be caused directly by the Stand or the chains themselves, but the shortening effect can cause damage if used in a smart way)
Speed: A (Once connections are made, the chains appear as soon as Yorke wills it)
Range: D (any connection must be touched by Yorke, maximum length of the chains is approx: 40 feet and the connection points must be within 100 feet of Yorke)
Durability: A (chains are extremely strong, the durability depends on how many exist at one time. A single chain is nigh on unbreakable, 2-5 can be broken by Power A and 6-10 can be broken by power B)
Precision: D (any attempts at ranged use are invariably unwieldy but the points that form connections can be incredibly precise)
Learning: B (There are plenty of uses for AiC’s properties)
Appearance: Appears as a small Tiki Idol about a foot tall with an orange mask of a woman’s face attached to it with thick black chains that jangle when it moves. The chains that the Stand generates are glowing orange links that appear almost diamond shaped in their appearance.
Example of Power: While encountering a surly, off-duty cop who Yorke (correctly) deduces has an unfaithful wife, the man starts swinging fists at the detective and trying to knock him out. Yorke evades these blows and taps a glass on the counter before flicking the cop in the brow. After the man recovers from this indignity, the glass appears to fly off the counter and smash into his face to the startled fear of onlookers. At least, any who aren’t Stand Users, they would have seen the chain form and rapidly shorten, all while Yorke resumed his seat and commented that he could see why the wife was unfaithful.
